The order of the Thistle is Scotland’s version of the English Order of the Garter. It was founded in 1540 by James the 5th of Scotland and revived in 1687 by James the 7th of Scotland (James the 2nd of England). Shown here are the various attributes of the order: the Mantle, the Collar, the Star, the Badge and the Hat.
The Order's primary emblem is the thistle, the national flower of Scotland. The motto is ‘Nemo me impune lacessit’ ( Latin for "No one provokes me with impunity"); The same motto also appears on the Royal Coat of Arms of the United Kingdom for use in Scotland and on some of the pound coins. The patron saint of the Order is St Andrew.
