John Phillips (a clay merchant resident in Newton Abbot) took over an existing pottery a mile south of that town and used it to manufacture drain pipes, roof tiles etc. After a major fire in 1881 it was rebuilt and the emphasis switched to art pottery, Phillips having been a major proponent for art pottery as a source of local employment. Aller Vale became one of the most prominent art pottery producers in the Torquay area and many examples of their wares can be found on line. A small number of salt glazed jugs, both plain and sprigged are recorded as well as a series of Doulton copies in more traditional Devon lead glazed red earthenware. The salt glaze is presumed to be from about 1870 and the earthenware a decade or so later. The pottery finally closed in 1932
